Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker Tasting Notes

Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2014

Release Date: November 2017

The 2014 vintage represents yet another of the warm and dry vintages we have had in California and the Stag’s Leap district.  This has provided excellent viticultural conditions for us to grow wines of great intensity and concentration. The 2014 Cabernet shows its classic aromas of ripe plum, blackberry, and blueberry with intriguing expressions of vanilla spice, chocolate, and fresh tobacco leaf.  The textured pallet has great structure and presence but finishes remarkably smooth and rich.

Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2012

ONLY AVAILABLE IN VERTICALS

Release Date: September 2015

The 2012 Malk Family Vineyards Stag’s Leap Cabernet is a perfect example of what the appellation has to offer. The dark, yet vibrant color of the wine gives the first glimpse of its depth and elegance. The nose offers classic ripe black currant aromas, but is highlighted with beautiful floral qualities, light clove and spice, and even notes of milk chocolate and vanilla. The 2012 reveals interesting mineral notes of crushed gravel and even notes of the loamy and volcanic soils in which the grapes are grown. While the weighty palate is incredibly supple, there is plenty of concentration in this wine to carry it for many years of enjoyment.

Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2011

Release Date: Fall 2014

2011 Malk Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is an incredibly interesting wine and certainly a product of a vintage that leant itself far more to a fall in Bordeaux than a hot and dry October in the Napa Valley. The 2011 vintage was one that was quite different than most we experience in Northern California. The moderate growing season quickly cooled off in September and even gave us a little precipitation in October. Normally, these are the months that really push the vines and clusters to the limit and result in the rather ripe character of Napa Valley Cabernet. In 2011, we are provided with a wine that has much more restraint and many of the attributes found in classic Bordeaux or Old World wines. The first aromas from the glass are filled with mint, sage, plum, licorice and cedar. As the wine opens, more mineral notes of granite and graphite are noticed with light underlying tones of sweet vanilla and allspice. The palate is smooth upon entry and for those who have long called for lower alcohol and more finessed wines, this more gentle approach on the palate will be greatly appreciated. That being said, the wines presence is impressive and lingers on the palate long after the initial sip. It finishes with grace and elegance and is sure to continue to improve for many years in the cellar.

Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2010

Release Date: July 2013

The 2010 vintage in the Napa Valley may be what some consider a “sleeper” vintage. Originally not as highly touted as the 2009 vintage, the 2010 has produced some wines of incredible depth and complexity and certainly will prove to be wines that hold up as nicely over time as they do in their youth. The Malk Family Cabernet is no exception. It was one of the deepest and broadest presence on the palate as we have produced. The structure and finesse is classic Stag’s Leap District, but the concentration and weight is certainly impressive. Aromatically the wine presents a beautiful ripe currant and dark berry quality, but there is a reserved earth and mineral character that makes this wine special and gives us the impression there are plenty of more expressions this wine will share over time.

The 2009 Malk Family Vineyards Stag's Leap Cabernet is a pleasure from start to finish. It's deep, dark red appearance offers a first glimpse of its rich and lively nature. The 2009 also offers interesting mineral notes of crushed gravel and even notes of the loamy and volcanic soils in which the grapes are grown. More delicate aromas of paper whites and lavender come and go as they mix with hints of fresh tobacco leaf and cedar. While the weighty palate is incredibly supple, there is plenty of concentration in this wine to carry it for many years of enjoyment.

Release Date: January 2012

The 2008 Malk Family Vineyards is the product of a moderate and well balanced growing season. This wine is sure to give you everything you expect from Malk wines with a touch more refinement and polish. The gorgeous nose starts with floral notes of fresh cut flowers and lavender. Deeper, richer notes of ripe blackberry and currant soon prevail and are complimented with background hints of chocolate, spice, and cedar. The palate is as developed as any Cabernet we have made. Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2007

ONLY AVAILABLE IN VERTICALS

Release Date: October 2010

The 2007 Vintage of the Malk Family Vineyards is likely our best effort to date. We find deeper notes of blackberry and black cherry in the 2007, along with the rich currant and ripe red fruit we’ve enjoyed in previous vintages. The fruit aromas are highlighted with warm spicy notes that follow through to the palate giving way to the classic silky mouthfeel we have come to expect. This vintage does offer a bit more extraction and body and should age well for many years.

Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2006

The Malk Family Vineyards 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent example of both the vineyard and the district. Ripe aromas of cassis extract, black cherry, and hints of spice show the classic nose of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Underlying notes of vanilla and cedar also carry through to the palate, which exhibits a full body and rich tannins allowing the wine to be appreciated now, but should age nicely for years to come.

Malk Sonoma Coast
Pinot Noir
2015

Release Date: March 2017

While the 2015 vintage produced minimal quantities of Pinot Noir on the Sonoma Coast, the quality is superb. We have excellent concentration, but the wine maintains amazing elegance and balance as Pinot Noir should. This wine shows great depth both aromatically and on the palate. Dark, ripe plum and black cherry notes are complimented by fresh earth, sweet tobacco and spice. The palate has substantial weight, but it is very refined and, again, shows focus, balance, and elegance throughout the palate.

Malk Sonoma Coast
Pinot Noir
2013

Release Date: January 2015

The 2013 Malk Family Vineyards Pinot Noir will be released in January 2015, and what a vintage to start with. We have sourced our fruit from an amazing vineyard on the “true” Sonoma Coast high in the hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Adjoining and nearby vineyards include Peter Michael, Marcassin, Flowers, Hirsch, Del Dotto, and Pahlmeyer.

The 2013 vintage gave us both excellent yields and superior quality. Pinot Noir from this area are definitely not your simpler Pinots from the valley floor. This Pinot is packed with classic ripe wild strawberry and blackberry, but has the warm underlying tones of forest floor, fresh mushrooms, and even a delicate marine quality indicative of its growing area.

On the palate, this wine is smooth and sensual, but not to be confused with delicate. It has excellent body and structure that make it an excellent food wine and certainly cellar worthy.

- Kings Ridge Vineyard, Sonoma Coast
