2012 Cabernet Sauvignon

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2012 Malk Family Vineyards Stag’s Leap Cabernet is a perfect example of what the appellation has to offer. The dark, yet vibrant color of the wine gives the first glimpse of its depth and elegance. The nose offers classic ripe black currant aromas, but is highlighted with beautiful floral qualities, light clove and spice, and even notes of milk chocolate and vanilla. The 2012 reveals interesting mineral notes of crushed gravel and even notes of the loamy and volcanic soils in which the grapes are grown. While the weighty palate is incredibly supple, there is plenty of concentration in this wine to carry it for many years of enjoyment.

A very impressive 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from Malk Family Vineyards, both this vintage and the subsequent 2013 spent 20 months in 75% new French oak. The color is a dense ruby/purple, the wine shows plenty of classic creme de cassis, Christmas fruitcake and spice box. It has pure flavors, a full-bodied mouthfeel, but sweet tannin and a long, layered mouthfeel. This is impressive and realistically priced. Moreover, it should drink well for another 10-15 years.

A full and rich red with sweet plum and berry character. Round tannins and a flavorful finish. A little jammy. But still outstanding quality. Drink now.
