This inky, herbaceous 100% Cabernet is defined by peppercorn and dusty, chalky pencil shavings. Juicy on the palate as well as soft and supple, it’s complex and etched in black licorice, with a lingering finish.

I think that, like '98, the last widely panned Napa vintage, the 2011 Cabernets might one day be the best-tasting bottles in those wineries' cellars. I went to St. Helena recently to blind-taste 90 of them, looking not for competence, but for greatness.

Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon

Malk calls itself the smallest producer of 100-percent Stags Leap District Cabernet, so you know this isn't an easy wine to find. South African Brian Malk bought the vineyard adjacent to Fay Vineyard in 1997. Stags Leap District wines have been prized for elegance, and thus have fallen behind some of the gutsier mountain Cabs in the mind of some critics. This is a good representation of why the district became famous before some of the others: it's a smooth, seamless wine with savory and floral notes integrated into blackberry fruit.
