Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker Tasting Notes

Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2011

ONLY AVAILABLE IN VERTICALS

Release Date: Fall 2014

2011 Malk Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is an incredibly interesting wine and certainly a product of a vintage that leant itself far more to a fall in Bordeaux than a hot and dry October in the Napa Valley. The 2011 vintage was one that was quite different than most we experience in Northern California. The moderate growing season quickly cooled off in September and even gave us a little precipitation in October. Normally, these are the months that really push the vines and clusters to the limit and result in the rather ripe character of Napa Valley Cabernet. In 2011, we are provided with a wine that has much more restraint and many of the attributes found in classic Bordeaux or Old World wines. The first aromas from the glass are filled with mint, sage, plum, licorice and cedar. As the wine opens, more mineral notes of granite and graphite are noticed with light underlying tones of sweet vanilla and allspice. The palate is smooth upon entry and for those who have long called for lower alcohol and more finessed wines, this more gentle approach on the palate will be greatly appreciated. That being said, the wines presence is impressive and lingers on the palate long after the initial sip. It finishes with grace and elegance and is sure to continue to improve for many years in the cellar..

Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2010
ONLY AVAILABLE IN VERTICALS

Release Date: July 2013

The 2010 vintage in the Napa Valley may be what some consider a “sleeper” vintage. Originally not as highly touted as the 2009 vintage, the 2010 has produced some wines of incredible depth and complexity and certainly will prove to be wines that hold up as nicely over time as they do in their youth. The Malk Family Cabernet is no exception. It was one of the deepest and broadest presence on the palate as we have produced. The structure and finesse is classic Stag’s Leap District, but the concentration and weight is certainly impressive. Aromatically the wine presents a beautiful ripe currant and dark berry quality, but there is a reserved earth and mineral character that makes this wine special and gives us the impression there are plenty of more expressions this wine will share over time.

Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2009

ONLY AVAILABLE IN VERTICALS

Release Date: December 2012

The 2009 Malk Family Vineyards Stag's Leap Cabernet is a pleasure from start to finish. It's deep, dark red appearance offers a first glimpse of its rich and lively nature. The nose is filled with many of the attributes that have become signatures of this wine...vanilla-spice, sweet chocolate, and ripe blackberry and currant. The 2009 also offers interesting mineral notes of crushed gravel and even notes of the loamy and volcanic soils in which the grapes are grown. More delicate aromas of paper whites and lavender come and go as they mix with hints of fresh tobacco leaf and cedar. While the weighty palate is incredibly supple, there is plenty of concentration in this wine to carry it for many years of enjoyment.

The 2008 Malk Family Vineyards is the product of a moderate and well balanced growing season. This wine is sure to give you everything you expect from Malk wines with a touch more refinement and polish. The gorgeous nose starts with floral notes of fresh cut flowers and lavender. Deeper, richer notes of ripe blackberry and currant soon prevail and are complimented with background hints of chocolate, spice, and cedar. The palate is as developed as any Cabernet we have made. Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2007

ONLY AVAILABLE IN VERTICALS

Release Date: October 2010

The 2007 Vintage of the Malk Family Vineyards is likely our best effort to date. We find deeper notes of blackberry and black cherry in the 2007, along with the rich currant and ripe red fruit we’ve enjoyed in previous vintages. The fruit aromas are highlighted with warm spicy notes that follow through to the palate giving way to the classic silky mouthfeel we have come to expect. This vintage does offer a bit more extraction and body and should age well for many years.

Malk Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon
2006

The Malk Family Vineyards 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent example of both the vineyard and the district. Ripe aromas of cassis extract, black cherry, and hints of spice show the classic nose of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Underlying notes of vanilla and cedar also carry through to the palate, which exhibits a full body and rich tannins allowing the wine to be appreciated now, but should age nicely for years to come.

Sauvignon Blanc Winemaker Tasting Notes

Malk Napa Valley
Sauvignon Blanc
2013

Release Date: May 2014

Our primary source for Sauvignon Blanc, the Ryan’s Vineyard, continues to impress us year after year. With each additional year of vine age, as well as continued efforts to perfect farming practices, the vines and grapes seem to respond nicely to any given vintage. With the 2013 vintage, fresh lime and granite notes first jump from the glass. As the wine opens more, the classic fruit blossom aromas come forward along with a sweet spice quality. The wine shows a clean and delicate entry on the palate with a creamy texture and a focused acidity. It is always interesting to note, our Sauvignon Blancs tend to be lively and fresh on the palate in their infancy, but mellow and build body as they age. We enjoy them in both expressions.

Malk Napa Valley
Sauvignon Blanc
2011

ONLY AVAILABLE IN VERTICALS

Release Date: May 2012

Once again, the 2011 vintage produced a wine of beautiful aromatic character and elegant presence on the palate. White flowers, fresh peach, and ripe mellon notes prevail on the nose, with underlying notes of light citrus and orange blossom. The taste is silky, yet weighty, framed perfectly with the classic Sauvignon Blanc crispness.

Located in the Oak Knoll District in the heart of Napa Valley, Ryan’s Vineyard named after owner George Verhey’s son is the source for our much loved Sauvignon Blanc. This vineyard produces consistent wonderful fruit from 15 year old vines. This wine is fermented in neutral oak barrels to gain the benefit of small amounts of air throughout the aging process without adding the impact of oak flavor. The juice was fermented with indigenous yeasts to offer the inherent complexity provided by this natural process, and the wine was allowed to age on the lees with light battonage to build the palate.
